Understanding Scars

Scars are a natural part of the skin's healing process following injury, inflammation, surgery or acne. As the skin repairs itself, collagen is produced to close and strengthen the wound. Depending on how the skin heals, scars may become raised, depressed, discoloured or remain relatively flat.

Every scar is unique. Its appearance is influenced by factors such as the type and depth of injury, genetics, skin type, location on the body and the body's natural healing response. While scars cannot usually be removed completely, evidence-based treatments may help improve their appearance, texture and overall skin quality.

  • Assess scar maturity and factors influencing healing

  • Develop a personalised scar management plan

  • Recommend evidence-based professional skincare

  • Provide professional treatments where clinically appropriate

  • Monitor your progress and adjust your treatment plan over time

  • Collaborate with DermAssist and Consultant Dermatologist Dr Phil Tong when specialist assessment or medical management is clinically appropriate

Can scars be completely removed?

Scars are a permanent part of the skin's healing process and cannot usually be removed completely. However, many scars can be improved through evidence-based treatments that support collagen remodelling and improve their appearance.

Why do some people develop raised scars?

Some individuals naturally produce excess collagen during wound healing, resulting in raised scars such as hypertrophic scars. Genetics, wound tension and inflammation can all influence scar formation.

What treatments may be recommended?

Following a comprehensive skin assessment, your dermal clinician may recommend a combination of:

  • Professional skincare

  • Skin needling or non-ablative fractional laser

  • Chemical peels (where appropriate)

  • Laser or IPL therapies (for suitable indications)

  • LED phototherapy

  • Personalised home care

Treatment recommendations are always tailored to your scar type, skin health and treatment goals.
