Understanding Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated inflammatory skin condition with a strong genetic component. It commonly appears as well-defined red, thickened patches of skin covered with silvery-white scales and may affect areas such as the scalp, elbows, knees, trunk and nails.

Psoriasis is a lifelong medical condition that cannot currently be cured, however appropriate medical management and supportive skin care can help reduce flare-ups, improve skin comfort and support long-term skin health. If psoriasis is suspected or has not previously been diagnosed, your dermal clinician may recommend assessment through DermAssist and Consultant Dermatologist Dr Phil Tong or your GP to confirm the diagnosis before developing an ongoing management plan.

How our Dermal Clinician's Support You

Your dermal clinician works alongside your medical team to help support healthier skin and improve comfort throughout your psoriasis journey.

Throughout your care, your dermal clinician may:

  • Conduct a comprehensive skin assessment

  • Identify potential flare-up triggers

  • Assess your skin barrier health

  • Recommend evidence-based skincare to support the skin barrier

  • Provide appropriate professional treatments where clinically suitable

  • Educate you on trigger avoidance and long-term skin care

  • Monitor your skin and adjust recommendations over time

  • Collaborate with DermAssist and Consultant Dermatologist Dr Phil Tong when specialist assessment or medical management is required

Is psoriasis the same as eczema?

No. Although both conditions can cause red, inflamed and itchy skin, psoriasis is an immune-mediated inflammatory condition, while eczema primarily involves skin barrier dysfunction and inflammation. They require different management approaches.

Can psoriasis be cured?

There is currently no cure for psoriasis. However, many people successfully manage their symptoms through appropriate medical treatment, skincare and trigger management.

Is psoriasis contagious?

No. Psoriasis cannot be spread from person to person and is not contagious.
